Tasting notes

This elegant and savory wine from our estate vineyard highlights vibrant raspberry flavors and classic cool-climate aromas of violet perfume and savory olive. The wine is embraced by mouthwatering acidity, layered with remarkable finesse, and an intense ruby color.

Production
Terroir

We have farmed Nelson Vineyard since 2009. Located directly south of our winery on a wind-exposed site, it produces wines with concentrated flavors and bright acidity, enhancing structure and longevity through slow ripening and thick skins.Nelson Vineyard sits on a peninsula jutting into the Columbia River. Wind-deposited sands and loam soils create a complex structure. The site’s early bud break and late frost extend the growing season, allowing complex flavors to develop. Winds inhibit photosynthesis, leading to darker wines with moderate alcohol and a distinct savory character. Organic farming supports sustainability and enhances purity.

Vinification

Syrah was 100% de-stemmed and native yeast fermented in small open top fermenters with manual punch downs.

Free Run juice was kept separate for elevage in Ermitage and Atelier ‘Cigar’ French oak barrels.

Winery
Winery Description

Syncline ('sin-klin): a trough of stratified rock in which the beds dip toward each other from either side. The winery is named after the Coyote Wall Syncline visible from the property.

Owners and winemakers James and Poppy Manton's winery and vineyards are located in the Columbia Gorge AVA, which straddles Washington and Oregon. They were part of the small group that founded the Columbia Gorge AVA in 2004. The AVA is divided into a cool, rainfall-rich western part and a semi-arid desert eastern part. They source grapes from both areas of this special region and from top-rated growers throughout Washington State.

Started in 1999 with only 76 cases by a couple who had been making Pinot Noir in Oregon, Syncline's winemaking philosophy has remained consistent. All wines are delicate and elegant. They have built a strong reputation as a creative, limited-production, autonomous estate winery with a vision of creating world-class wines while maintaining biodynamic estate vineyards, green building practices, and innovative winegrowing.
