Tasting notes
Juicy with fresh cherry and pomegranate notes, this wine rolls across the palate in a ribbon of freshness. There are compelling cedar and cinnamon bark notes on the nose as well as a hint of crushed lavender, layered in its complexity. The finish is silky and flowing. This wine will be as equally delicious tonight as it will be years into the future.
Terroir
This wine is made from grapes from Block 1 of their own Quarter Mile Lane Vineyard. This particular block was planted by hand (and watered by hand!) by David and Ginny Adelsheim in 1974. ) and continues the legacy tradition that is the foundation of this winery to this day. It is very special to us and we always treat it with the respect it deserves.
Vinification
Pinot Noir is widely known as a fickle and unwieldy grape variety, but for us it is the perfect partner. No other black grape can so clearly and unmistakably express the characteristics of its vintage, soil, and growing methods. We take great care to express its natural characteristics faithfully, both in the vineyard and in the winery - never forcing it, always letting the vineyard speak for itself. Our approach is not recipe-driven. Rather, we are flexible and adaptable to the vintage, using our many years of experience and relying on intuition and taste. For example, some vintages and vineyard sites lend themselves to whole cluster fermentation, which results in different stem content for each wine and each vintage. Cap management during fermentation is primarily pump-over, with occasional punch-downs as needed during daily tastings. Certain wines may be aged in barrels for longer periods of time depending on the vintage, based on the pace of their progress. All of these winemaking choices are for our ultimate goal— to respect and enhance the original quality of the vineyard and to tamper with it as little as possible. Aged in 228L French oak barrels (29% new)
Winery Description
Adelsheim Vineyard was founded with an optimistic spirit and a lofty dream: To create World-Class wines in an undiscovered wine region, the Chehalem Mountains of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Luck, fate, and a single-minded determination to make world-class wine in Oregon led David and Ginny Adelsheim to purchase their first 19 acres just outside Newberg, Oregon in 1971. Drawn to the uniqueness of the land and its proximity to Portland, it was here they decided to stake their claim, plant their first rows of Pinot noir along Quarter Mile Lane, and establish what would become the Chehalem Mountains’ first-ever winery in 1978—Adelsheim.
