Product description

At its core Breaking Ground Chardonnay is an exploration of our backyard and the wonderful delights found there. We are always careful to include fruit grown in the three major soil types of our region marine sedimentary, volcanic basalt, and wind-blown loess. Each provides a unique character to the resulting wine. It is our annual charge in the cellar to produce a wine that can unify these distinctive pieces into a cohesive picture, one that best illustrates our corner of the Chehalem Mountains.

Tasting notes

Wonderfully effusive notes of bergamot orange, white peach, and lemon thyme greet me in the glass. The interplay of aromas is very engaging; I keep returning to see what scents will arrive next. There is plenty of texture and richness to the wine but all within a taut, structural framework indicative of our cool climate. The finish of this wine is long and smooth. I’ll let you know when it’s ended.

Production
Terroir

Grapes for this wine are selected from our favorite hillside vineyards in the Chehalem Mountains AVA. In 2021 there were 5 vineyards included in this bottling representing all three of the major soil types in the AVA, 83% of which are estate properties.

Ribbon Springs: 28 % (sedimentary, estate)

Bryan Creek: 25% (volcanic, estate)

Grand Oak: 17% (loess, non-estate)

Quarter Mile Lane: 15% (volcanic, estate)

Boulder Bluff: 15% (volcanic, estate)

Vinification

Fermentation:

The grapes were hand-picked and gently whole cluster pressed, then allowed to briefly settle before racking and the start of fermentation. Early in fermentation the wine was transferred to French oak barrels where it completed the fermentation process. All of the wine was allowed to go through full malo-lactic fermentation.

Aging:

The wine was fermented and aged in French oak barrels (both 228L barriques and 500L puncheons, 35% new) for 12 months followed by another 5 months in stainless steel tank prior to bottling.

Winery
Winery Description

Adelsheim Vineyard was founded with an optimistic spirit and a lofty dream: To create World-Class wines in an undiscovered wine region, the Chehalem Mountains of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Luck, fate, and a single-minded determination to make world-class wine in Oregon led David and Ginny Adelsheim to purchase their first 19 acres just outside Newberg, Oregon in 1971. Drawn to the uniqueness of the land and its proximity to Portland, it was here they decided to stake their claim, plant their first rows of Pinot noir along Quarter Mile Lane, and establish what would become the Chehalem Mountains’ first-ever winery in 1978—Adelsheim.
