Product description
Located at the eastern edge of the Columbia Gorge AVA, our Estate Gruner Veltliner vineyard produces wine of great intensity and freshness. Grown in windblown soils overlaying fractured basalt, the vines pull powerful energy and verve from this dynamic terrain. The Columbia River moderates our temperatures and channels the wind across the landscape resulting in vibrant wines with great finesse. Biodynamic and organic vineyard practices allow the purity of the site to be best expressed.

- Tasting notes
-
This Grüner Veltliner is powerful and electric. A lively acidity cuts through its rich texture, highlighting flavors of crisp white melon, white peach, golden hay, and wet stone. Savory undertones provide depth with a mineral-driven finish.

Vineyard
West Balch Ranch is on a neighboring property adjacent to the winery. We began farming this site from the original planting in 2017, and are thrilled to add this vineyard of Viognier and Gruner Veltliner to our estate wine bottling. We have implemented Biodynamic practices and organic farming as with all of our estate vines.
- Vinification
-
All fruit was hand picked, whole cluster pressed. Two successive pickings were separated by three weeks. Native fermentation and elevage was half in French acacia puncheons, half if a Noblot concrete “Egg”.
Bottled June, 2025
Winery
- Winery Description
Syncline ('sin-klin): a trough of stratified rock in which the beds dip toward each other from either side. The winery is named after the Coyote Wall Syncline visible from the property.
Owners and winemakers James and Poppy Manton's winery and vineyards are located in the Columbia Gorge AVA, which straddles Washington and Oregon. They were part of the small group that founded the Columbia Gorge AVA in 2004. The AVA is divided into a cool, rainfall-rich western part and a semi-arid desert eastern part. They source grapes from both areas of this special region and from top-rated growers throughout Washington State.
Started in 1999 with only 76 cases by a couple who had been making Pinot Noir in Oregon, Syncline's winemaking philosophy has remained consistent. All wines are delicate and elegant. They have built a strong reputation as a creative, limited-production, autonomous estate winery with a vision of creating world-class wines while maintaining biodynamic estate vineyards, green building practices, and innovative winegrowing.
