Orca International : Wineries : L'Ecole No. 41

Internationally Recognized for Merlot and Semillon

The third winery to be established in the Walla Walla Valley, L'Ecole No. 41 has been a leader in the production of premium handcrafted varietal wines since 1983. The winery is located in an old schoolhouse built in 1915 in historic Frenchtown, just west of Walla Walla. The name 'L'Ecole No. 41' is French for 'school in district number 41', and was the original name of the school building which now houses the winery. The name was retained for the winery to salute the pioneering viticultural efforts of the first French-Canadian settlers in the area. The label, drawn by an 8-year-old cousin of co-owner and winemaker Martin Clubb, represents the winery as it appears today superimposed on the schoolhouse's old chalkboard. L'Ecole No. 41 has received numerous awards for its wines, including selection of their Cabernet Sauvignon to Wine Spectator magazine's prestigious 'Top 100 Wines of the Year' list in both 2001 and 2002. Despite the accolades received by the Cabernet Sauvignon, the winery is still best known for their rich Merlot and for being one of the top American producers of Semillon.
